Impediment to our quest

 

 Even if we wish to, there are a lot of impediments to our quest for the Almighty. Why? 

 Dear Friends A close friend and a good kriyayogi once asked me a question on the subject above, today. This makes me very happy indeed, as it shows in one go, the churning of the juices in the brain and the utility of the Stray Thoughts series. We have seen and some have felt rather acutely, others a little mildly that the greatest critics of all our actions are our spouses. It would be serious mistake to treat them as impediments or hindrances, for they are not that at all. A car needs both the accelerator and the brake as well; I often say. Just imagine the great potential for disaster that a car without brakes would have. Goswami Tulsidas has said “निंदक निअरे राखिये कुटी आँगन छवाय ". The Almighty has provided the nindak in the shape of our spouse and no need for the kutia in the aangan as well. I recall a true story related by my Param Gurudev Tiwari Baba to my Gurudev: Lahiri Baba’s disciple Krishnanand used to sit with his own set of disciples in the evenings and do Guru and Bhagwat charcha. One day his wife appeared and started abusing Krishnanandji in a loud voice. She accused him of being a no good lazy bum hiding behind his sham devotion to Guru and God, to avoid exerting for his livelihood. She also let go of a few choice expletives and left no one in doubt what she thought of all the ‘Bhagwat charcha’ that was going on. When she eventually got tired and saw absolutely no reaction from her husband despite her angry abusive goading; she left. On her departure Krishnanand merely said “ Please do not let this incident disturb you, it is my prarabdh and it is bound to happen every now and then It is also my Guru’s method of testing my resolve. Let us continue” and then they did Naam the prayer. A similar incident comes to mind about the Saint-Queen Meerabai. Her aide and constant companion, Lalita, pained at all the torture inflicted on her by Ranaji queried incredulously: “ Bai sa, aap par itna kuchch zulum dhahte hain Ranaji, aur aap ko jara sa gussa bhi nahi aata ? Kis mitti ki bani hain aap Bai sa?” An equally surprised Meerabai replied: “ Kab ? mujhe to kuchch yaad nahin hai!” The saint was totally unaware of the unnecessary events, and too busy in conversation with her beloved Lord. If we react to all the stimulii that we get during a day, good or bad, then we shall be very tired and drained out at the end of the day. But worse we shall be disturbed, depressed and morose. We must therefore very carefully pick and choose, when and where to react, and where not to. There is absolutely no point in reacting to everything that life throws our way.

A four liner from the “VAIRAGYA SHATAK” by Raja Bhartrihari the ancestor of Raja Vikramaditya almost a thousand years ago comes to mind. Raja Bhartrihari took sanyas in the prime of his life and at the peak of his reign. My childhood Aryasamaji Guruji, Sri Akhilanandji Bramhachari, who used to stay with us by the grace of my grand father, from the early thirties till the late sixties, and passed away in 1968, at the age of 84yrs, used to sing it in his sonorous voice, quite often, when I was a mere boy. But I never forgot it fully, and after some effort I could get a learned Sanskrit scholar Wageeshji, at Gurudham Mandar to fish it out for me. It is written in the melodious Shikharni chaand. It goes like this:

अहौ वा हारे वा ,  बलपति रिपौ वा, सुहृद वा !
मनौ वा लोश्टे वा, कुसुम शयने वा दृषिद वा!!
सूखे वा दुखे वा, मम सम  दृशौ यान्तु दिवसः !
क्वचिटपुण्यारण्ये, शिव शिव प्रलपते !!!

Whether it is a snake or a costly necklace decorating my neck, a powerful enemy or a friend, facing me! Whether it is a large mani (diamond) or a piece of earth, whether I get a bed of roses or a rock to sleep on! In joy or in misery, may I have the same outlook! In a pilgrimage or in the forest, O my Lord bless me so that, my days are spent chanting Shiv, Shiv!!!!  When your eyes are fixed on your target (like Arjun's on the fish eye), all impediments will become meaningless. That kind of determination is a must if you are looking to be close to the Almighty. No halfhearted measures, like visiting a holy place or organising a pooja,  will do. You have to merely look at the lives of the great rishis, saints and the great devotees who have faced penury, hardship, scorn and even physical adversity on their way to achieve their cherished Lord. Sur Das, Sudama, Meera, Narsinh Mehta, these are not figments of imagination; they are true, shining and ideal characters who have presented an alternate style of living and all the facts related thereto for us , and shown us the path.

Do we want to follow this or just do drawing room talk about it? Your yearning and desperation for the Lord has to be as strong as a drowning man’s for a breath of air. In the Gita the Lord has said you must stay in this world much like lotus leaf in water. Neither the water soaks in from below nor the rain water. “Padmapatra miwambhasa” Your need to carry on with your daily grind, can not be ignored or put aside but at every step the thought of the Lord must guide you and your actions. You need not abandon your daily and family duties, please learn to abandon only the fruits of your action God is a serious and very demanding occupation. Do you really want to give up everything else and go for it? The decision is and HAS to be yours, and yours alone.

Even He has left it to you. Everyone comes to this bridge in ones life and must decide whether to cross it or not. THINK. Ask Him for His help if you एक बार भगवान कृष्ण की पत्नी महारानी सत्यभामा को अपनी सुन्दरता का अभिमान हो चला।दरबार में सिंहासन पर बैठे महारानी सत्यभामा ने श्री कृष्ण से अनायास ही पूछ लिया,"स्वामी!आपने त्रेता युग में भगवान राम के रूप में अवतार लिया था तथा सीता आपकी पत्नी थीं।क्या वह मुझसे भी ज्यादा सुन्दर थी?" 

श्री कृष्ण सत्यभामा के प्रश्न का उत्तर देते कि उससे पहले ही गरुड़ बोल पड़े,"प्रभु!क्या मुझसे भी ज्यादा तीव्र गति से कोई इस सम्पूर्ण जग में उड़ सकता है।"

ये सुन सुदर्शन से भी नहीं रहा गया और वह भी बोल पड़ा,"भगवन!मैनें बड़े-बड़े युद्धों में आपको विजयश्री दिलवाई है। 

क्या संसार में मुझसे भी बड़ा कोई शक्तिशाली है।" तीनों की ये बातें सुन श्री कृष्ण मंद-मंद मुस्कुरा रहे थे और जान रहे थे कि इन सबमें अहंकार आ गया है जिसे नष्ट करना अति आवश्यक है।तब श्री कृष्ण ने उन तीनो से कहा,"मेरा एक परम भक्त है, हनुमान।तुम तीनों के प्रश्नों के उत्तर वही... 

...भलीभांति दे पाएगा। हे गरुड़! तुम तो बड़ी तीव्र गति से उड़ते हो।तुम जाओ और हनुमान को ये कहकर बुला लाओ कि भगवान राम , माता सीता के साथ उनकी प्रतीक्षा कर रहे हैं। प्रभु राम और माता सीता का नाम सुनकर वे दौड़े-दौड़े चले आएंगे।" गरुड़ भगवान की आज्ञा लेकर हनुमानजी को बुलाने उड़ चले।

इधर श्री कृष्ण ने सत्यभामा से कहा कि देवी आप सीता के रूप में तैयार हो जाएं और स्वयं द्वारकाधीश ने श्री राम का रूप धारण कर लिया।फिर श्री कृष्ण ने सुदर्शन को आज्ञा देते हुए कहा कि तुम महल के प्रवेशद्वार पर पहरा दो।ज्ञात रहे कि मेरी आज्ञा के बिना कोई भी महल में प्रवेश न करने पाए ।

सुदर्शन ने कहा,"जो आज्ञा भगवन।"
ये कहकर सुदर्शन चक्र महल के प्रवेशद्वार पर तैनात हो गया।
गरूड़ ने हनुमानजी के पास पहुंचकर कहा,"हे कपिश्रेश्ठ!प्रभु राम माता सीता के साथ द्वारका पधारे हैं और आपसे मिलने के लिए व्याकुल हैं।मुझे आपको बुलाने भेजा है।आप मेरे साथ चलिये। 

मैं अपनी पीठ पे बैठा कर आपको शीघ्र ही आकाश मार्ग से उनके पास ले जाऊंगा।"

हनुमान ये सुनते ही भगवान श्री कृष्ण की सारी लीला को समझ गए कि वे उन्हें क्यों बुला रहे हैं।हनुमान ने विनयपूर्वक गरुड़ से कहा,"आप चलिये बन्धु ।मैं पीछे-पीछे आता हूँ ।"

गरुड़ अपने मन ही मन सोचने लगा कि पता नहीं ये बुड्ढा वानर कब पहुंचेगा।पर मुझे क्या,कभी भी पहुंचे।मेरा कार्य तो पूरा हो गया।मैं वापस चलता हूं।गरुड़ शीघ्रता से द्वारका की ओर उड़ चले।गरुड़ अभी रस्ते में ही होंगे कि हनुमान द्वारका पहुंच भी गए।प्रवेशद्वार पर सुदर्शन ने उन्हें रोक लिया।

सुदर्शन बड़े ही अहंकारी लहजे में बोला,"तुम अन्दर नहीं जा सकते।प्रभु ने किसी को भी अन्दर आने से मना किया है।" हनुमान मुस्कराए और बोले,"हे सुदर्शन!तुम मेरे मार्ग से हट जाओ।जब प्रभु राम अपने इस भक्त को स्वयं बुलावा भेजें तब मुझे उनसे मिलने में ज़रा सी भी देर करना पसंद नहीं ।"

पर सुदर्शन नहीं माना।तब हनुमानजी ने सुदर्शन को पकड़कर अपने मूंह में जिह्वा के नीचे दबा दिया और सहर्ष अपने प्रभु के दर्शन करने पहुंच गए।

श्री कृष्ण को श्री राम के रूप में देख हनुमान अत्यंत प्रसन्न होकर बोले,"हे प्रभु! आपके इस कृष्ण अवतार के दर्शन पाकर मैं धन्य हो गया। 

मैं जानता हूं कि आप ही मेरे प्रभु राम हैं जो कृष्ण रूप में मेरे समक्ष बैठे हैं परंतु आपने माता सीता के स्थान पर ये किस दासी को इतना सम्मान दे दिया कि वो आपके साथ सिंहासन पर विराजमान है।"ये सुनकर रानी सत्यभामा को जो अपनी सुन्दरता पर अभिमान था वो पलभर में चूर हो गया। 

तब श्री कृष्ण ने हनुमान को प्रेमपूर्वक अपने गले से लगा लिया और पूछा,"हे पवनपुत्र!मैने तो सुदर्शन से कहा था कि किसी को अन्दर न आने दे, उसने तुम्हें रोका नहीं?"

हनुमान ने मुस्कुराते हुए अपने मूंह से सुदर्शन चक्र को निकाला और कहा,"प्रभु!आपसे मिलने से मुझे क्या भला कोई रोक सकता है?

सुदर्शन ने रोकने का तनिक प्रयास किया था, इसलिए मैं इसे मूंह में रखकर आपसे मिलने चला आया।मुझे क्षमा करें।"

श्री कृष्ण मंद-मंद मुस्कुराते हुए इस पूरी लीला का आनन्द लेते रहे। 

इतना सब होने के पश्चात गरुड़ हांफते हुए श्री कृष्ण के दरबार पहुंचे और हनुमानजी को उनके आने के पहले ही...

...वहां पहुंचा देख अचंभित हुए व लज्जा के मारे पानी पानी हो गए । गरुड़, सुदर्शन और सत्यभामा, तीनों ही भगवान की इस लीला को समझ गए और उनकी आंखों से पश्चाताप के आंसू बहने लगे। तीनों ने श्री हनुमान को प्रणाम किया और प्रभु श्री कृष्ण के चरणों में झुक गए ।

इस प्रकार भगवान ने अपने भक्तों का अहंकार, अपने परम भक्त द्वारा ही दूर किया।
